Application of a microfluidic reaction system for CdSe nanocrystal preparation: their growth kinetics and photoluminescence analysis

Abstract: We used a microreactor for CdSe nanocrystal preparation and explored the effects of experimental conditions on the properties of the products. The particle growth kinetics and photoluminescence properties of the nanocrystals showed identical trends to previous reports, indicating the efficiency of the current method for analysis of rapid nanocrystal synthesis as well as industrial production of CdSe nanocrystals.

“…The synthesis of the CdSe QDs was modified from the original organometallic procedure [18] for utilization of the microfluidic reactor [9,17,19]. Three raw material stock solutions (Se source, Cd source and ligand solutions) were prepared under a dry nitrogen atmosphere.…”

“…However, in the initial stage of reaction, typically within tens of seconds, the nucleation process is abrupt and dominant over the slow growth * Author to whom correspondence should be addressed process [8]. To date numerous studies have been carried out to explore the growth kinetics and mechanism [5,[8][9][10][11][12][13], but it still remains a challenge to probe the rapid nucleation process [14,15].…”

“…Chemical synthesis in microreactors requires controlled heating/incubation in combinatorial chemical reactions, and the reviews can be found elsewhere [6]. The use of incubating microreactors has also been reported to investigate reaction kinetics [7], cell-free protein synthesis [8], and nanocrystal growth [9].…”

“…The CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs were later synthesized using hot-injection methods. [20][21][22][23][24] To exchange the surface capping agent of the QDs for the amine passivation, APOL and H 2 O (v/v 10/1) solutions were loaded into the TOP capped QDs solution. The solution was then stirred intensively by a magnetic stirrer and simultaneously irradiated several times using a halogen lamp.…”
