Application of a Method for Intelligent Multi-Criteria Analysis of the Environmental Impact of Tailing Ponds in Northern Kosovo and Metohija

Abstract: Abstract:The technological process of exploitation of mineral resources and processing of mined ores to cater to the market results, among other things, in a large amount of tailings deposed on tailing ponds. Because of the chemical composition of the material, the increasing amount of waste, and the mismanagement of recovery and reclamation of ponds, these ponds have become a significant element of negative impact on the surrounding ecosystem. Economics was behind the discharging of this material, resulting i… Show more

“…The last step in the AHP method is to check the error, i.e., verification of the consistency of the decision-maker [26,27]. The consistency condition is that the value of the random consistency index Energies 2019, 12, 4044 9 of 18 CR (22) is less than 10%.…”

“…With respect to mining waste management, [12] applied this methodology for the selection of sites suitable for stone (solid waste) disposal facilities on a case study in Greece, and [13] applied Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) in analysis of strategies for waste management in iron mines in India. Whereas, [14] used it for analysis of the environmental impact of tailing ponds in ore mining area in Northern Kosovo. Other examples of the method's applications connected with mining include mineral processing site selection [15], selection of remedial alternatives for mine sites [16], and multicriteria assessment of the technologies of management of waste from coal mining sites [17].…”
