Application of a Heat- and Steam-Generating Sheet Increases Peripheral Blood Flow and Induces Parasympathetic Predominance

Abstract: To promote the practical application of a Japanese traditional medical treatment, such as hot compresses, we developed a plaster-type warming device consisting of a heat- and steam-generating sheet (HSG sheet). First, we tested its effects when applied to the anterior abdominal wall or lumbar region of women complaining of a tendency towards constipation. Application of the sheet to either region produced a feeling of comfort in the abdomen, as assessed by a survey of the subjects. The significant increases in… Show more

“…Afferents including receptors activated by WAS were unclear. However, several reports have shown that local warming at about 40°C applied to lumbar or abdominal regions induced pleasant sensations [9,24]. Rolls showed that warming the hand of subjects at 41°C brought about a pleasant emotion and induced a significant neural activation in the orbito-frontal cortex, pregenual cingulated cortex and ventral striatum [25].…”

“…A previous study reported that mood states such as happy and angry were correlated with autonomic nervous activity (Kop et al., ). Furthermore, application of the same HSG sheet increased feelings of comfort with increased parasympathetic nervous activity (Nagashima et al., ). These results suggest that alteration of emotional states during thermal stimulation might change autonomic nervous activity.…”

“…Recently, we have developed a disposable heat- and steam-generating (HSG) sheet that safely and easily warms the periocular, abdominal, or lumbar skin and reported that it is able to reduce sympathetic and increase parasympathetic nerve activity [ 6 , 7 ], as well as enhancing alpha-band electroencephalogram activity [ 8 ], leading to potential relaxation of somatic arousal.…”
