Application of a Gondwanan perspective to restore ecological integrity in the south‐western Australian global biodiversity hotspot

Abstract: Bounded by ocean and desert, the isolated, predominately Mediterranean-climate region of south-western Australia (SWA) includes nine bioregions (circa 44 million hectares). The ecological integrity of the landscapes in this global biodiversity hotspot has been compromised by deforestation, fragmentation, exploitation, and introduced biota. Nature and degree of transformation varies between four interconnected landscapes (Swan Coastal Plain; South-west Forests; Wandoo Woodlands; and Great Western Woodlands). A … Show more

“…However, many animals such as short‐range endemics have narrow distributions and poor colonization capacity (Harvey ). Relatively high proportions of such taxa occur in some environments (Rix et al ; Mason et al ), particularly in old stable landscapes (Mucina & Wardell‐Johnson ; Wardell‐Johnson et al ). This limits the generality of findings from studies on highly mobile organisms, or those from more recent landscapes.…”

“…Since 2001 there has been a substantial increase in reserved area, so that by 2018, 49% of tall eucalypt forests and 31% of the Warren Bioregion are within the statutory reserve system (Wardell-Johnson et al 2016). This region (947 500 ha) now includes the highest level of reservation of the nine southwestern Mediterranean-climate bioregions (Wardell-Johnson et al 2016). It is also the least cleared of the SWA high-rainfall bioregions (18%) and contains the largest area in public ownership (i.e.…”

“…It is also the least cleared of the SWA high-rainfall bioregions (18%) and contains the largest area in public ownership (i.e. State forest or similar) (Wardell-Johnson et al 2016). Nevertheless, there remains disquiet as to the value to society of logging SWA's tall forests.…”
