Application of a Design and Construction Method Based on a Study of User Needs in the Prevention of Accidents Involving Operators of Demolition Robots

Abstract: The paper presents a new method of design and construction aimed at developing a system that helps to prevent accidents involving demolition robot operators. The method is based on a study of user needs and was developed in accordance with Design Thinking methodology. This study provides a theoretical review of designing processes and methodologies, including conceptual design, and explores the implementation of the proposed method in the designing process for a Human–Machine Interface (HMI) accident preventio… Show more

“…As evidenced from the research, clusters create synergies between businesses and universities, and research and reinforce links between them using existing strengths and opportunities. Clusters ensure the continuous development of new technologies resulting, first of all, from the possibility of cooperation among different entities and involvement in research of scientific units [78]. Clusters constitute an integral part of the innovative environment and play a significant function by providing a fast flow of information and effective acquisition of knowledge in the process of absorption of innovation.…”

“…Occupational and work-related accidents were addressed by Shafique and Rafiq, "An Overview of Construction Occupational Accidents in the Hong Kong: A Recent Trend and Future Perspectives" [4], whereas Kakhki and co-workers discussed the "Use of Logistic Regression to Identify Factors Influencing the Post-Incident State of Occupational Injuries in Agribusiness Operations" [5]. Also on the civil construction domain, Derlukiewicz discussed the "Application of a Design and Construction Method Based on a Study of User Needs In The Prevention of Accidents Involving Operators of Demolition Robots" [6].…”

“…The courses are adapted for general field robotic platforms to conduct systems analysis, finding and fixing performance issues, and defining capability limitations in a general basic field robotic platform. Field robotic systems may tackle a variety of jobs, such as agricultural work [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] (Figure 1a,b), firefighting [37][38][39], construction/demolition [40][41][42] (Figure 1c), search-and-rescue missions [43][44][45] (Figure 1d), and work in explosive or hazardous environments [46][47][48][49][50] (Figure 1e), among others. They are generally small platforms (i.e., small vehicles) and may be controlled by-wire (manual control), semi-autonomous or tele-operated control (SA/TO), or may be controlled autonomously.…”

“…According to the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute [51], a good general definition for field robotics is "the use of mobile robots in field environments such as work sites and natural terrain, where the robots must safeguard themselves while performing non-repetitive tasks and objective sensing as well as self-navigation in random or dynamic environments." Example field robotic platforms for (a,b) agriculture [28,29], (c) construction and demolition [40], (d) search-and-rescue [43], and (e) working in explosive or hazardous environments [46] (All figures originally published under CC-BY-4.0 license).…”
