Water quality modelling is the primary tool used for catchment and stream water quality investigations. The general architecture of a typical water quality model is the integration of the pollutant processes with the hydrologic and hydraulic approaches. However, due to the lack of specific local information and poor understanding of the limitations of various estimation techniques and underlying physical parameters, modelling approaches are often subjected to producing gross errors. Most of the available water quality models are too simple and/or stochastic in nature. Many of those models perform water quality estimations in isolation, i.e. separate water quality models for catchment and stream analyses. Isolated models may lead to inconsistencies and biased results in the prediction of water quality parameters. On the other hand, there are some integrated water quality models, which are very complex requiring huge physical and chemical data as well as determining many model parameters. This paper presents the development of a simple, integrated and deterministic catchment-stream water quality model to be able to continuously simulate different water quality parameters. The integrated model is comprised of two individual models: the catchment water quality model and the stream water quality model. The catchment water quality model consists of two sub-models: rainfall-runoff model and pollutant processes model. The rainfall-runoff model was developed by considering the time-area method of runoff routing. The model estimates amount of surface runoff generated from a specified catchment for which rainfall data is provided. Water quality parameters were incorporated with the developed rainfall-runoff model, which represents the catchment water quality model. This model estimates the amount of pollutant accumulated on catchment surfaces during the antecedent dry days, and their transportation with surface runoff into waterways and receiving water bodies throughout storm events. Similar to the catchment water quality model, the stream water quality model comprised of two sub-models: the stream flow model and stream pollutant processes model. The stream flow model was developed by considering the Muskingum-Cunge method of stream routing. The stream flow model estimates the rate of water flow into the downstream sections of a particular stream reach. The processes of the same water quality parameters as used in the catchment water quality model were incorporated with the stream flow model which represents the stream water quality model. Final output of the stream water quality model is the concentration of transported pollutants into different downstream sections of a particular stream reach. Finally, the catchment water quality model and the stream water quality model were integrated for the continuous simulation of previously mentioned water quality parameters. The development of computational tools based on urban drainage models is fundamental for the correct selection of SUDS. The present study proposes a systematic approach based on continuous modeling on USEPA SWMM. The objective was to select the most suitable Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) by evaluating several aspects related to their design and configuration. The proposed methodology was applied to a conceptual watershed with meteorological information from Santander, Spain. The analysis of SUDS design parameters showed that only the surface variables showed a sensitivity of ≈20% for berm height and vegetation volume. The optimal configuration for the case study was a SUDS train consisting of green roofs, permeable pavements, vegetated swales and rain gardens, with 1% of the total subcatchment area cover, one structure, and a semi-aggregated spatial distribution. The methodology proved efficient but also highly dependent on the case study parameters and the meteorological conditions. The SUDS proved to have different efficiencies (30%—90%) in reducing the total runoff volume, the peak flow, and the pollutant loads depending on the region where the conceptual watershed was modeled. The methodology proved to be efficient for studying the combinations and interconnection of seven different typologies, as well as the effect of SUDS configuration, design and distribution on their performance.

This paper describes the application of the storm water management model (SWMM) for predicting the sewage quality in the sanitary sewer system of the study area resulting from the leaking of stormwater surface runoff to the system during rainfall events at different return periods. The concentrations of major pollutants were assessed in the sanitary sewer system at different rainfall intensities. Then, a solution to mitigate the problem was proposed using low impact development (LID) technology. The results of sensitivity analysis indicated that maximum build-up possible was the most sensitive parameter for model calibration. The model was calibrated using actual rainfall events, and statistical validation coefficients of R (0.81–0.82) and NMSE (0.0173–0.022) proved that the model is valid. The sewage quality assessment results showed that pollutants concentration increased to its maximum level at 20 min and gradually decreased to a slightly constant minimum value after 2 h. The proposed solution of LID reduced the pollutants concentrations by 82–88, 75–77, 52–55, and 7–10% for all pollutants at return periods of 2, 5, 10, and 25 years, respectively. To conclude, SWMM simulation successfully predicted the concentration of the pollutants, and leaking of stormwater surface runoff has changed the sewage quality.
