Application-aware software-defined EPON access network

Abstract: As bandwidth requirements of users in passive optical networks (PONs) continue to increase rapidly, especially due to the growth of video-streaming traffic, the need for resolving bandwidth contention among competing users and applications becomes more compelling. To address this problem, we propose Application-Aware Software-Defined Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) architecture. It utilizes application-level feedback from the client side (for video users) to the network, through a Software-Defined-Netw… Show more

“…The Transport layer (control plane) is responsible for transmitting and receiving the data packet information from the applications orchestrating the client to the SDN controller. The infrastructure layer (data plane) is where the actual physical transfer of control and data packets takes place [48]. The SDOAN-SDN Controller has an interface with the clients (SDN application management, i.e., Tactile Internet-DWBA service) via north-bound API (NB-API).…”

“…The networks need to sophisticatedly delve deeper into tenant-applications to enhance high performance. The ability to benefit from application-awareness depends upon SDN, particularly separating the data plane from the control plane, and thus facilitates on the fly network architecture reconfiguration and dynamic control of efficient resource allocation [28]. This opens application-aware networking making VDC-based application-aware networking a crucial and attractive cloud datacenter approach.…”
