Application and evaluation of a GPS multi-antenna system for dam deformation monitoring

Abstract: This paper describes GPS multi-antenna device (one GPS receiver links multiple antennas) developed by authors, and the experimental results are presented. GPS has already proven to be an efficient tool for monitoring dam deformations and stability of high-risk slopes. It offers greater accuracy than other surveying techniques. However, GPS has its disadvantages when employing for slope and dam monitoring. The major drawback has been high cost due to large-scale GPS deployments are required in monitoring sites.… Show more

“…He et al conducted a remote-controlled GPS monitoring system using GPS multiantenna technology and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) wireless data communication to monitor the dam deformation and steep slope movement for reducing cost in large projects [7][8][9]. However, the multiantenna method is not multiantenna clock-synchronized technology in the true sense.…”

“…A special device of GPS multi‐antenna switch was designed for sequentially receiving GPS signals from each antennas and sending to a common receiver ( Figure ) . The other signal switch devices similar to GPS multi‐antenna switch were also designed by Forward et al and He et al The multi‐antenna GPS system can significantly reduce GPS hardware costs for monitoring deformations. This multi‐antenna technique is only suitable to the long‐term static displacement monitoring of engineering structures because the data of multi‐antenna GPS system are not collected continuously …”

“…Due to its high precision, 24 hours availability, operability under all weather conditions and automation, GPS technique has been widely used in monitoring ground movement, deformation and subsidence (He et al, 2004;King et al, 1995;Kogan et al, 2000). In Victoria, GPSnet with its high-precision observation data provides a technically-advanced and cost-effective geoscientific infrastructure for deformation monitoring analysis.…”
