Application and development of fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases: A review

Abstract: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) restores a balanced intestinal flora, which helps to cure recurrent Clostridium difficile infections (RCDI). FMT has also been used to treat other gastrointestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and chronic constipation, as well as a variety of non-GI disorders. The purpose of this review is to discuss gut microbiota and FMT treatment of GI and non-GI diseases. An imbalanced gut microbiota is kn… Show more

“…Since then, FMT has gained recognition as a therapy for a wide range of gastrointestinal as well as non-gastrointestinal conditions. However, there remains limited understanding of its mechanism of action and potential long-term side effects (258). The probable therapeutic effects of FMT have also been demonstrated in a number of animal models involving people with severe multiple sclerosis, autism, multidrugresistant (MDR) infections, and multiple organ failure in seriously confined people (259-261).…”

“…Fecal bacteria transplantation (FMT) refers to the prevention and treatment of parenteral diseases by implanting beneficial bacteria such as probiotics in healthy people into the intestines of patients to reshape new flora ( Mahmoudi and Hossainpour, 2023 ). FMT therapy for CDI has promising clinical applications ( Khoruts et al., 2010 ).…”

“…Since the gut microbiota is known to be the causally responsible for the development and deterioration of metabolic syndromes, it may at least partially regulate the occurrence of metabolic imbalance-induced fatigue [ 113 , 123 ]. The elevation of bacteria producing L-lactic acid in the gut microbiome will also lead to the exacerbation of exercise-induced fatigue [ 124 ].…”
