The aim of present study is to investigate the influence of heat treatment schedule on the microstructure, tensile properties, and wear behavior of dual phase (DP) steels. In this regard, a cold‐rolled low carbon steel (0.18% C, 1.25% Mn) is subjected to intercritical annealing (IA), step quenching (SQ), and intermediate quenching (IQ) heat treatment cycles to produce DP steels with different microstructures. The results show that the tensile strength, strength‐elongation balance, and wear resistance of DP steels change in the order of SQ < IA < IQ. Variation of work hardening rate (θ = dσ/dϵ) with stress for the IA treated DP steel shows a one stage behavior corresponding to stage III, where θ linearly decreases with increasing flow stress. In contrast, for IQ and SQ treated specimens, a two stage behavior corresponding to an initial rapid decrease of θ with stress (transition stage) followed by stage III hardening are observed. The dominant wear mechanism for DP steels produced by IA and IQ treatments is a combination of abrasion and oxidation, while for the SQ treated specimen, a combination of oxidation and delamination is observed.

Serrated flow and work-hardening behavior (by Voce equation) of China low activation martensitic (CLAM) steel were investigated in the temperature range of 300-923 K (27 • C to 650 • C). The steel exhibited serrated flow at intermediate temperatures of 573-623 K (300-350 • C) and elevated temperatures higher than 773 K (500 • C), respectively. Type A, A + B, A + C, A + D, and mild serrations were identified. The observed serrations, the plateau/peak in flow stress and a minimum in ductility suggested the occurrence of dynamic strain aging (DSA), a phenomenon due to interactions between solute atoms and dislocations during plastic deformation, at intermediate temperatures, while the mild serrations observed at high temperatures were ascribed to a combined effect of tensile deformation and dynamic recovery. The variations of work-hardening parameters including saturation stress σ S , initial stress σ I and rate parameter n V with respect to temperatures also implied the dominance of DSA at intermediate temperatures. CLAM steel in present investigation generally displayed two-stage work-hardening behavior consisting of transient stage and stage-III. Good correlations had been presented between work-hardening parameters obtained by Voce equation and the respective experimental tensile properties, suggesting adequate applicability of Voce relationship for CLAM steel.

The use of press hardening components has widely increased in the last decades in the automotive industry due to the possibility to obtain high strength parts with ductile zones for energy absorption. Conventional and partial press hardening are used depending on the needed properties of the final components. Quenching, and thus phase transformation, are performed within the tool under an applied load, making plausible to assume for the transformation plasticity effect to play a main role, leading to a minimized spring-back effect. The influence of stresses, especially larger than austenite yield strength (high stresses), and pre-strain on the bainite transformation kinetics are discussed for a 22MnB5 steel grade. Experimental evidence of the strong nonlinearity of the transformation plasticity of bainite regarding the applied stresses and differences between tensile and compression cases are here introduced.
