Applicability of the International Affective Picture System in Chinese older adults: A validation study

Abstract: The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) is a standardized tool widely used to induce emotions in psychological studies. The present study examined the reliability and validity of the IAPS in Chinese older adults. A sample consisting of 126 Chinese older adults (86 females; aged 67.3 ± 4.96 years; 13.2 ± 2.75 years of education) was recruited to rate valence and arousal for 942 IAPS pictures. The results showed a satisfactory reliability and validity of the IAPS among these participants. The reliabili… Show more

“…The interpretation of an active withdrawal of attention is further supported by the rating data (affective judgments). Replicating previous findings, unpleasant pictures were rated as more arousing than pleasant pictures by women in the age range of the current sample (see Cuthbert et al, ; Gong & Wang, ). This effect was amplified in breast cancer survivors who rated unpleasant pictures as more (and pleasant pictures as less) arousing than age‐matched controls, a finding that has also been observed in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Adenauer et al, ).…”

“…Unpleasant (BCS: M 5 7.17; control: M 5 6.61) and pleasant pictures (BCS: M 5 3.29; control: M 5 3.73) were rated as more arousing than neutral pictures (BCS: M 5 2.58; control: M 5 2.47; arousal: F(2, 98) 5 373.0, p < .001). Replicating previous findings with women in the age range of the current sample (Cuthbert, Bradley, Zabaldo, Martinez, & Lang, 1994;Gong & Wang, 2016), unpleasant pictures were rated as significantly more arousing than pleasant pictures, F(1, 50) 5 303.50, p < .001. These differences in the arousal ratings between unpleasant and pleasant pictures were significantly larger in the BCS group (Emotion 3 Group: F(2, 98) 5 4.37, p 5 .019).…”

“…As a cultural bias for the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) has been reported in Chinese participants ( Huang and Luo, 2004 ; Liu et al, 2009 ; Gong and Wang, 2016 ), the 60 pictures (20 negative, 20 neutral and 20 positive) we used in the current study were selected from the native Chinese Affective Picture System ( Chen et al, 2008 ; Li et al, 2008 ; Yuan et al, 2008 ). Normative mean valences ( SD ) (1 = very unpleasant, 9 = very pleasant) and arousal (1 = very calming, 9 = very excited) ratings were 1.89 (0.43) and 5.63 (0.16) for negative pictures, 7.03 (0.27) and 5.64 (0.25) for positive pictures and 5.38 (0.23) and 4.10 (0.20) for neutral pictures.…”
