Applicability of generic quality indicators for appropriate antibiotic use in daily hospital practice: a cross-sectional point-prevalence multicenter study

Abstract: The ability to monitor the appropriateness of hospital antibiotic use is a key element of an effective antibiotic stewardship program. A set of 11 generic quality indicators (QIs) was previously developed to assess the quality of antibiotic use in hospitalized adults treated for a bacterial infection. The primary aim of the current study was to assess the clinimetric properties of these QIs (nine process and two structure indicators) in daily clinical practice. In a cross-sectional point-prevalence survey, per… Show more

“…The ability to measure the appropriateness of antibiotic use for individual patients is one of the main requirements for an effective stewardship program. However, the identification of QIs with good performance properties (5,13,14) is still one of the developing areas in ASPs. Indicators with sufficient applicability, reliability, and casemixture stability to be widely used remain to be defined.…”

“…In 2015, Van den Bosch et al developed a set of QIs related to the antimicrobial prescription process, obtained by Delphi methodology, for all hospitalized patients with suspected bacterial infections (12). These indicators were later validated in daily clinical practice in a multicenter study in the Netherlands (13). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of this set of previously developed QIs (12,13) (Table 1), in order to identify the potential room for improvement in antibiotic use in our setting.…”
