Applicability of Corbicula as a bioindicator for monitoring organochlorine pesticides in fresh and brackish waters

Abstract: The applicability of Corbicula as a bioindicator for monitoring organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in fresh and brackish waters is presented here. Differences in isomer compositions and OCP bioaccumulation levels were analyzed in western Japan and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Isomer compositions of DDTs, chlordanes, and HCHs were significantly different between the two areas because of their different historical uses and property of the chemicals. This is represented by the (DDE + DDD)/DDT ratio in Corb… Show more

“…They rapidly reflect changing PCB levels in the water and, therefore, are used to monitor aquatic PCB pollution (O’Rourke et al 2004, Takabe et al 2011, Tanabe et al 1987, Wang et al 2010a). The rapid change in PCB levels in mussels is due to the large gill surface to volume ratio (Morrison et al 1995).…”

“…The level of dieldrin in Corbicula of Lake Singkarak (nd -10 μg/kg) are higher than the levels reported in Lake Biwa-Yodo River System in the range 0.02 -1.10 μg/kg [10]. Donets [8] reported Corbicula of Lake Binh Thien, Vietnam contains OC compounds, including lindane, β-HCH, p,p'-DDE, and PCB 28.…”

“…They have been reported to contain compounds as derivatives of organochlorine [7]. Several studies have shown the presence of OC in Corbicula in freshwater [8][9] [10] meanwhile other studies have recorded the concentration of OC in the lake waters [11]. Because of their relatively sedentary lifestyle [12] and easy to collect [10]., Corbicula could be an useful bioindicator for monitoring OC.…”

“…Corbicula a kind of sediment-dwelling bivalve exists in worldwide [5]. Clam is physiologically well adapted to unstable, unpredictable habitats such as drainage systems, waters receiving agricultural and industrial pollution, urban waste, and discharges from mines and is an efficient seston feeder that is capable of filtering up to 2.5 L water/h [6].…”
