Apple tree flowering is mediated by low level of melatonin under the regulation of seasonal light signal

Abstract: Melatonin regulates the seasonal reproduction in photoperiodic sensitive animals. Its function in plants reproduction has not been extensively studied. In the current study, the effects of melatonin on the apple tree flowering have been systematically investigated. For consecutive 2‐year monitoring, it was found that the flowering was always associated with the drop of melatonin level in apple tree. Melatonin application before flowering postponed apple tree flowering with a dose‐dependent manner. The increase… Show more

“…A recent study in apple flower buds also showed that the expression of melatonin biosynthetic genes, MdASMT9 and MdSNAT5, was significantly enhanced upon melatonin treatment. 50 Based on these results, it can be speculated that exogenous melatonin application reduces endogenous ABA accumulation and maintains in vivo melatonin concentrations by simultaneously downregulating the expression of ABA biosynthetic genes and upregulating the expression of melatonin biosynthetic genes. In contrast, in Elymus nutans and cucumber, melatonin treatment was found to elevate ABA production under cold stress.…”

“…Accordingly, the drop in transcription levels of melatonin biosynthetic genes including BrTDC2 , BrTDC3 , BrTDC4 , BrT5H , BrASMT, and BrSNAT was also inhibited by melatonin application (Figure B). “…The enhancement of salt tolerance through melatonin application mainly depends on directly scavenging ROS and enhancing the activities of antioxidative enzymes and photosynthetic efficiency, as well as regulating the transcription of genes related to salt stress [34]. Melatonin plays a function with dose-dependent effects, and an optimum concentration of melatonin plays a role in resisting environmental stresses; optimum concentrations are different among different plant species [52]. Before exogenous application of melatonin, a suitable melatonin concentration must be chosen through pre-experiment evaluation.…”

“…As a result, leaf photosynthesis and the growth of maize plants were inhibited. Zhang et al [35] also obtained similar results on the effects of melatonin concentrations on flowering in apple tree. Overexpression of SNAcT gene in rice is similar to the continuous supplementation of melatonin, while in the soybean and grape trials, the short-term supplementation of melatonin resulted in the difference in melatonin supply.…”
