Apple Peel Flavonoid Fraction 4 Suppresses Breast Cancer Cell Growth by Cytostatic and Cytotoxic Mechanisms

Abstract: Many dietary flavonoids possess anti-cancer activities. Here, the effect of apple peel flavonoid fraction 4 (AF4) on the growth of triple-negative (MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468), estrogen receptor-positive (MCF-7), and HER2-positive (SKBR3) breast cancer cells was determined and compared with the effect of AF4 on normal mammary epithelial cells and dermal fibroblasts. AF4 inhibited breast cancer cell growth in monolayer cultures, as well as the growth of MCF-7 spheroids, without substantially affecting the viability… Show more

“…The biological effects of apple phenolic compounds are also of interest. Flavonoids extracted from apple peel were implicated in the suppression of breast cancer and the growth of carcinogenic cells in the bronchi [George & Rupasinghe, 2017;Loung et al, 2019]. In turn, Zielińska et al [2019] proved the potential benefits of apple-derived polyphenols in modulating inflammation at the intestinal level.…”

“…Many herbal extracts and their derivatives have been used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases, including viral infections [ 80 ]. The positive effects of natural plant-derived flavonoids on neurodegenerative disorders [ 81 ], type-2 diabetes [ 82 ], atherosclerosis [ 83 ], cardiovascular diseases [ 84 , 85 ], and cancer [ 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 ] are well known. A broad variety of antiviral effects of flavonoids have also been reported for many viruses, such as polio, astrovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, type 3 parainfluenza virus (PIV-3), and type A influenza virus (Flu A) [ 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 ].…”

“…Consequently, targeting the migration ability of breast cancer cells could provide a critical breakthrough in the development of potent chemotherapeutic drugs. Some studies have further investigated the effects of flavonoids on migration of the cell lines which is an integral characteristic of malignant tumour cells using in vitro tests such as Scrape wound healing assay (Sotillo et al, 2021), AP 48 chamber system to assess vertical migration and Oris™ cell migration assay (Xiong et al, 2021), Gap closure and transwell migration assay (Loung et al, 2019). A similar effect of inhibition of migration of the malignant cell lines was observed in these studies.…”
