Appendiceal Intussusception Masquerading as an Ileocolic Intussusception

Abstract: Classification of appendiceal intussusception (type I-V) is based on the level of appendiceal invagination. Appendectomy is the treatment of choice unless there is a concern for a neoplasm in which case a more extensive resection may be necessary. We report a 47-year-old with an appendiceal intussusception.

“…The patient described by Yamaguchi et al underwent ileocecal resection for an Appendix tumor, whereas the latter patient avoided intestinal resection. Six cases of attempted intraoperative reduction were found among twenty-two case reports; two patients underwent complete reduction, two patients underwent partial reduction and the remaining two cases were not successfully treated (Table 1) [4], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. The patients who underwent complete or partial reduction avoided extensive or invasive resection.…”

“…In the setting of a neoplasm, more extensive resection may need to be undertaken such as an ileocecectomy or right hemicolectomy [7]. There is an appendiceal inside the appendix.…”

“…The intussuscepted appendix may be reduced with a barium enema or air enema. Appendectomy is the treatment of choice in both children and adults [16,22]. It can be carried out by means of a laparotomy or laparoscopically [4].…”
