Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Cerebral Blood Volume in Brain Gliomas: Relation to Tumor Cell Density and Tumor Microvessel Density Based on Stereotactic Biopsies

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: MR imaging-based apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) measurements have been related respectively to both cell and microvessel density in brain tumors. However, because of the high degree of heterogeneity in gliomas, a direct correlation between these MR imaging-based measurements and histopathologic features is required. The purpose of this study was to correlate regionally ADC and rCBV values with both cell and microvessel density in gliomas, … Show more

“…1,3,[10][11][12]20,[24][25][26][27] Measurement of regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) was reported as showing close correlation with histopathologic grade in gliomas. 11,12,24 Because the rCBV measurement by using an MR perfusion study can reflect tumoral physiologic information such as the degree of neovascularity and angiogenesis, it might be very helpful to grade gliomas correctly preoperatively.…”

“…7 The higher the tumor cellularity and grade are, the lower the ADC is because of decreased water diffusivity. [6][7][8] However, other factors may be complicating this relationship:…”

“…2 Advanced MR imaging techniques such as DSC and DWI provide physiologic information that complements the anatomic information obtained from conventional MR imaging. [3][4][5][6] DWI quantifies cellularity on the basis of the premise that water diffusivity within the extracellular compartment is inversely related to the content and attenuation of the intracellular space. 7 The higher the tumor cellularity and grade are, the lower the ADC is because of decreased water diffusivity.…”

“…It has been found to correlate with microvascular proliferation [19][20][21][22] and vascular endothelial growth factor expression, a major regulator of tumor angiogenesis. 23 In meningiomas, both angiographic vascularity 24 and CBV 25 correlated with vascular endothelial growth factor expression.…”
