Apparatus to measure relativistic mass increase

Abstract: An apparatus that uses readily available material to measure the relativistic mass increase of beta particles from a radioactive 204 Tl source is described. Although the most accurate analysis uses curve fitting or a Kurie plot, students may just use the raw data and a simple calculation to verify the relativistic mass increase.

“…2.2). There are some authors that object the usage of the terms of the "relativistic mass" and "rest mass" in the literature (Adler 1987;Okun 1989Okun , 2009). They base their arguments to the relativistic relation of…”

“…Einstein's theory of special relativity (SR) is well established, and it asserts that infinite resistance is exerted on matter when it approaches the speed of light [1]. With the help of relativity, the inevitability of the Lorentz factor (LF) in the kinetic energy of a high-speed particle is experimentally verified [2]. Therefore, the spacetime fabric can produce infinite resistance Like inertia, the classical connection between energy and gravitational field should be modified with relativistic mechanics, retaining the underlying hypothesis of general relativity (GR).…”

“…These sources emit quasimonoenergetic conversion electrons of sufficient intensity to be able to carry out a measurement of the electron velocity within a few hours. Compared to other devices for the investigation of energetic electrons [7][8][9][10] our apparatus is conceptually simple. Our use of electrons from radioactive sources, instead of using electrons from a linear or Van de Graaff accelerator, makes it much simpler to operate than, e.g., the classic experiment by Bertozzi.…”
