The university context is increasingly complex and diverse. Students’ individual circumstances in particular, whether personal or relating to family and work, are increasingly challenging. They are affecting their academic development or even leading to them dropping out of university. The objective of this study was to identify the obstacles to the completion of university studies based on students’ perspectives. Adopting a qualitative approach, we analysed the narratives of randomly selected students at UTE University of Santo Domingo (Ecuador). The main barriers identified by the students were the lack of reconciliation between academic and/or work life and family, as well as schedule incompatibilities—making it difficult for them to attend class. Participants also noted that teachers usually failed to incorporate curricular adaptations according to students’ personal or professional circumstances, which prevented them from experiencing a normal learning process like their classmates. To conclude, factors that continue to interfere with students’ university trajectories include the following: insufficient financial resources, family reconciliation issues, and lack of institutional support. Higher Education Institutions should therefore promote strategies and/or provide resources that guarantee equal opportunities for university students and contribute to the development of lifelong learning.

Background: The objective of this study was to asses frequency of employ, as well, as the level of knowledge of post-coital contraception in young female university students, living at the municipality of Tunja, Colombia. Methods: Descriptive, observational cross-sectional study. A sample of 615 students from two universities, public one and private the other, answered a survey about knowledge, sexual practices and the use of contraceptive methods, including the emergency contraceptive pill. Results: Mean age 21.18 years; Mean age of onset of sexuality 16.5 years; 59.7% had a stable partner; 69.6% answered that they had taken emergency contraception pill at least once in their life and 36.4% reported a frequency equal or greater than twice a year, while 17.5% considered it as a contraceptive method of habitual employment. Conclusions: Although the use of mechanical barrier methods as a method of contraception is not the objective of this study, we found that the condom is still the most commonly used contraceptive method by university students, but not used permanently or regularly. There is a high percentage of employment of emergency contraception pill, even with repetitive uses in short time periods. There is a high degree of conviction among young users about the contraceptive safety of the use of emergency contraception pill.

Cuando la maternidad se presenta en la adolescencia, las mujeres requieren un sostén socioemocional que no siempre les pueden brindar sus familiares, pareja y personal de salud, lo que favorece que desarrollen una baja autoestima y conflictos con el rol materno. La investigación abordó este fenómeno explorando la relación entre apoyo social percibido, autoestima y maternidad a través de 15 entrevistas a mujeres que fueron madres adolescentes y cuyos hijos/as eran menores a 6 años. Los resultados mostraron que las participantes perciben el apoyo recibido en un continuo cuyas características van desde respetuoso hasta intrusivo o abiertamente dominante, lo que a su vez tiene implicaciones sobre su autoestima y autonomía materna. Las conclusiones alientan a repensar la maternidad adolescente como un evento vital que, a pesar de ser vivenciado con angustia, posibilita oportunidades para que las mujeres se desarrollen de manera integral, siempre y cuando cuenten con un apoyo social adecuado.
