Apoptotic properties of the type 1 interferon induced family of human mitochondrial membrane ISG12 proteins

Abstract: The ISG12 family constitute small hydrophic proteins involved in apoptosis. This is the first comparison of the apoptotic potentials of the full-length ISG12A protein and the three ISG12A variants. The differential apoptotic potentials of these proteins might have an impact on the strategies to monitor and interpret their dysregulation associated with many disorders.

“…In this study, we found that ISG12a was localized to the mitochondria and nuclear envelope in liver cancer cells, although a most recent study has reported that ISG12a and several of its variants are only localized to the mitochondria 11. “…Unlike other TNF superfamily members, TRAIL was also recognized as an apoptosisrelated ISG. 11,12 ISG12a localizes to the mitochondria, nuclear membrane and endoplasmic reticulum in different cell lines. 6,7 Some studies have reported that ISGs can regulate TRAIL-induced apoptosis.…”

“…IFI27 as a single gene biomarker can distinguish IFV from bacterial infection (Tang et al, 2017). Mechanistically, IFI27 may be of considerable interest since this gene product is a mitochondrial protein thought to be involved in apoptosis (Gytz et al, 2017; Rosebeck and Leaman, 2008). Thus, IFI27 might mediate some of the type I IFN-induced bystander attrition affects observed in previous studies (Bahl et al, 2006; McNally et al, 2001).…”
