“…In some cases, senescence may have an advantage over apoptosis as it allows communication between cells (Childs, Baker, Kirkland, Campisi, & van Deursen, ). Apoptosis of hepatocytes was found to be induced during RHD (Jung, Lee, Tai, Park, & Lee, ; Niedźwiedzka‐Rystwej & Deptuła, ), and the finding of significant overrepresentation of GO terms connected with cell ageing within our candidate genes suggests that this mechanism is important for surviving RHDV infection. The functions of the candidate genes with the lowest p ‐values annotated with the GO term “cellular senescence” (ABL1, CDKN1A and HMGA1) and their potential relevance in RHDV infections are summarized in Appendix .…”

“…Apoptosis refers to many cells of the macro--organism, and occurs both in physiological and pathological conditions, and it is now assumed to be an important element of immunity of mammals (Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej and Deptuła 2012, Niedźwiedzka--Rystwej and Deptuła 2012a, Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej et al 2013, Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej et al 2013a. Its role in immunology is related to, among others, immune system cells, which, after performing their function, are thus eliminated as damaged or changed cells (Baś et al 2004, Elmore 2007, Niedźwiedzka--Rystwej and Deptuła 2012, Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej et al 2013, Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej et al 2013a.…”

The facts place apoptosis of immune system cells at the focus of interest among immunologists, including diagnostics specialists.…”

“…With time and the growing interest of researchers in the virus and the pathogenesis of the disease caused by it, the participation of other factors in the pathogenesis of the disease was considered. Further studies focused on the liver, where the virus causes the greatest anatomic and pathological lesions, and it turned out that, in this organ, intensified cell death processes occur by way of necrosis (Park et al 1995) and apoptosis (Alonso et al 1998); the latter of these processes is also related to peripheral blood leukocytes from rabbits infected with RHDV (Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej and Deptuła 2012a, b). Moreover, other examinations showed that, during rabbit infection with RHDV, there is overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the liver, which is probably one of the causes of pathological lesions in this organ (Tuñón et al 2011a, b).…”
