Apomixis and strategies to induce apomixis to preserve hybrid vigor for multiple generations

Abstract: Hybrid seeds of several important crops with supreme qualities including yield, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance have been cultivated for decades. Thus far, a major challenge with hybrid seeds is that they do not have the ability to produce plants with the same qualities over subsequent generations. Apomixis, an asexual mode of reproduction by avoiding meiosis, exists naturally in flowering plants, and ultimately leads to seed production. Apomixis has the potential to preserve hybrid vigor for multiple gene… Show more

“…The NPBTs include CRISPR/Cas9, CRISPR/Cpf1, BE, and PE. These techniques have proved to be powerful tools for the successful modification of genome sequences in a simple and precise manner [ 14 ]. GETs have been applied to several crop plants, and desirable phenotypes have been successfully obtained.…”

“…Hopefully, increasing knowledge of genetic and molecular control of plant reproductive development will provide better insights into the regulation of apomixis. Studies on production of fertilization‐independent seeds in other species will shed light on future apomictic rice research (reviewed by Bicknell & Koltunow 2004; Fiaz et al ., 2021). Better understanding of the reproduction machinery in plants should enable the engineering of apomixis in rice in the future.…”

“…Moreover, the advanced toolkit of CRISPR i.e., base editing, prime editing, availability of various types of vectors, developments in gene transformation techniques, genomic sequence availability of various crop species, and free transgene editing, has made genome engineering the first and most reliable choice among researchers. Based on proof of concept in model and non-model species, it can be assumed NPBTs are the future of crop breeding [ 168 ].…”
