Apodization scheme for hardware-efficient beamformer

Abstract: Abstract-3D ultrasound is an emerging diagnostic technique that extends standard ultrasound imaging by capturing volumes, instead of planes. This brings completely new diagnostic opportunities, among which the possibility of disjoining image acquisition and analysis, thus enabling remote diagnosis, which would bring obvious medical and economic benefits.Unfortunately, 3D ultrasound is several orders of magnitude more computationally complex than 2D imaging. Therefore, algorithmic improvements to simplify the p… Show more

“…These regions are usually not critical for diagnosis, and in practice the disturbance is limited to a minor speckle pattern difference. Nonetheless, a detailed inaccuracy quantification using different metrics has been performed in [12], [64]. For what concerns static apodization, we have evaluated the impact of this optimization, finding that it only affects the shallowest 1.6 cm of the ROI, which overlaps with the inaccuracy introduced by the steering-based algorithm.…”

“…We have assessed and quantified in detail the image reconstruction quality of our system in [26], [28]. The assessment includes Point Spread Function (PSF) evaluation, numerical inaccuracy quantification, and statistical inaccuracy distribution within the volume.…”

“…3(a)). In order to account for the elements that need to be discarded due to either the side lobes generated by the directivity of the piezoelectric transducer or the inaccuracy introduced by the approximated delays, a trimmed apodization scheme has been designed [4]. The proposed apodization is tighter than usual, which minimizes the inaccuracy due to delay approximations while not affecting image quality severely.…”
