Harald Motzki initiated a theory of hadith analysis called Isnad Cum Matn analysis to counter hadith criticism by orientalist groups who are skeptical of hadith. They assume that all hadiths are fake, and also assume that common links are hadith forgers. This study aims to analyze the hadith authentication method initiated by Harald Motzki. Sources of research come from the work of Motzki, books and other articles that review this theory. The results of this literature study are: 1) Moztki rejects the opinion of Gholdziher, Schacht and Juynboll who state that hadith is inauthentic; 2) A common link does not mean a forger of hadith; 3) According to Motzki, to assess the authenticity of a hadith, one must study both sanad and matn (isnad cum matn analysis); 4) This method was applied by Kamaruddin Amin to the hadith of shaum by comparing historical variants and paying attention to the characteristics of the hadith editorial staff, which finally led to the conclusion that the hadith of shaum had been spread starting in the first half of the Hijri century; 5) Motzki's critique of skeptical orientalists points to the emergence of hadith and their assumption of common link and single strand, that hadith has been the basis of law since the first century of hijriah, then common link is considered as a collector of hadith, while single strand is the most trusted path.

This article aims to demonstrate Harald Motzki's theory of isnad-cum-matn analysis by tracing the hadith about usury. This hadith research theory is based on the historical critical approach (HCA) which is commonly used by Western scholars in investigating the validity of a hadith. This hadith dating method is carried out through an analysis of hadith transmission based on the simultaneous isnād and matan analysis methods. The main reference in tracing the origin of this hadith is by analyzing the pathways of transmission (isnad) by collecting and comparing variations of hadith texts, detecting partial common links (pcl) and common links (cl) in different paths of transmission and examining the material for find the common link whether purely as the first collector of the hadith. The author's findings in theoretical reflection on the hadith about usury show the Prophet SAW as a common link with three companions as partial common links, namely Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Hurairah and Bara' Ibn Hazib.

Artikel ini mendiskripsikan tentang kajian hadis tradisional perspektif Juynbol dan mengunakan teori pendekatan sejarah sosial dan sejarah ilmu sebagai pisau analisis perkembangan dan munculnya hadis laranagan niyaha. Perkembangan hadis dan kodifikasi hadis adalah menjadi bukti otentik dalam peradaban Islam. Pada kesempatannya hadis adalah sebagai salah satu hujjah untuk menguatkan suatu hukum yang disandarkan pada Nabi Muahmmad. Maka Juynbol sangat menarik untuk lebih mengenal hadis-hadis Nabi Muhammad. Karena itu Juynbol meneleti dari sekian banyak hadis-hadis Nabi Muhammd dan perkembangannya. Sehingga berkesimpulan, hadis adalah hasil produk ulama-ulama pada abad kedua dan tidak bersumber dari Nabi Muhammad karena hadis pada masa itu hanya digunakan untuk menguatkan dan kepentingan para madzhab fiqh dan teologis. Salah sutunya Juynbol tidak percaya dengan adanya hadis niyaha (lamenting) larangan meratapi kematian (probhition), karena menurutnya, niyaha itu sudah ada sejak masa jahiliyah, kemudian Islam itu datang melarang niyaha. Disamping dalam Al-Qur’an tidak ada keterkaitan laranagan niyaha dan yang semakna dengan niyaha seperi ranna, daraba khaddahu dan begitu seterusnya tidak ada hubungannya dengan masalah kematian, pada kesempatan yang lain hadis larangan niyaha dari sisi isnad adalah cacat di Ibn Sa’ad dan tidak bisa dilacak secara ilmiah.
