Palm oil production has increased significantly, specifically in Indonesia and Malaysia. However, this growth has raised environmental concerns due to the high discharge of empty fruit bunches, palm oil mill effluents, and other solid wastes. Therefore, this study aims to examine the treatment of palm oil waste by composting and systematically review insights into its application through a systematic literature review approach. Among the 1155 articles, a total of 135 were selected for a systematic review of palm oil waste management developments and their applications, while 14 were used for determining compost quality according to the criteria and requirements established in the systematic literature review. Moreover, using Egger’s test, JAMOVI 1.6.23 software was used to analyze random effects models with 95% confidence intervals and publication bias. The results showed that palm oil waste was optimally treated by composting, which is considered as a sustainable technology for protecting the environment, human safety, and economic value. The in-vessel method with a controlled composting chamber is the best system with a minimum time of 14 days. However, it requires tight control and provides a final product with a high microbial colony form outdoors and indoors compared to the windrow system. This study is useful to see the bias of research results and helps to find new studies that need to be developed, especially in this case related to the management of palm oil waste into organic compost fertilizer and its application methods in the field. It is suggested that applying palm oil waste or compost is mainly performed by mulching. In contrast, new challenges for better processing to produce organic fertilizers and applicable technologies for sustainable waste management are recommended. The method must be affordable, efficient, and practical, combining compost quality with maximum nutrient recovery.

Research on Soil Macrofauna as Bioindicator in Plantation Areas Given Palm Oil Mill Liquid Waste as Fertilizer was conducted in 2021. Samples were taken in Long Bed, Flat Bed, and Control areas using Purposive Sampling and Squares and Hand Sorting methods. Each location is determined by 9 sampling points. Soil macrofauna samples were identified in the USU FMIPA Ecology laboratory. From the results of the study, there were 3 soil macrofauna phyla, namely the Annelida phylum, which consisted of 1 class, 1 order, 2 families, and 2 species. Phylum Arthropoda consists of 5 classes, 10 orders, 16 families, and 27 species. Phylum Mollusca consists of 1 class, 1 order, 1 family, and 1 species. The highest population density (K) was obtained from the species Macrotermes gilvus, which was 81.10 individuals/m2 in the Control area, followed by Ponthoscolex corethrurus at 78.81 individuals/m2 in the Flat Bed area. The highest relative density (KR) was found in the species Macrotermes gilvus, which was 49.1% in the control area, followed by Ponthoscolex corethrurus at 46.84% in the Long Bed area. The highest frequency of presence (FK) was found in the Ponthoscolex corethrurus species, which was 100% in the Control and Flat Bed areas, and 88.88% in the Long Bed areas. Species that can live and reproduce well as bioindicators are Ponthoscolex corethrurus in the Long Bed area, followed by the Flat Bed and Control areas. The highest diversity index value was found in the Flat Bed area, which was 3,831 with the criteria for diversity being high, the distribution of the number of individuals for each species was high, the community stability was good and the soil community had not been polluted, while the Equitabilitas value was 1,258 with the criteria for high uniformity, stable community. The application of palm oil mill effluent as fertilizer to the plantation area can increase the life of the soil macrofauna, and the physical-chemical properties of the soil.

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan tumbuh tanaman buah naga menggunakan lumpur Sidoarjo. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Green House dan Laboratorium Fakultas Sains dan Teknologi Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo, dengan ketinggian ± 5 mdpl pada bulan Januari hingga Maret 2019. Metode penelitian yang yaitu metode deskriptif menggunakan media tanam lumpur lapindo yang terdiri dari 4 macam yaitu LP0 (100% Tanah), LP1(10% lumpur lapindo), LP2 (20% lumpur lapindo), dan LP3 (30% lumpur lapindo). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsentrasi lumpur lapindo dapat menyebabkan penghambatan pertumbuhan terhadap tanaman buah naga. Pada perlakuan LP1 tanaman buah naga menunjukkan respon pertumbuhan meskipun lebih rendah dari perlakuan kontrol (PL0), sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa tanaman buah naga memiliki toleransi terhadap konsentrasi lumpur lapindo 10%. Sedangkan pada perlakuan LP2 dan LP3, respon pertumbuhan belum terlihat, namun terdapat pertumbuhan akar-akar baru, sehingga terdapat kemungkinan adanya pertumbuhan tanaman buah naga pada pengamatan yang lebih lama.
