Aplastic Anaemia, Acute Myeloblastic Leukaemia, and Oxymetholone

Abstract: 743uterine activity (Alexandria units) at varying doses of orciprenaline in seven patients studied for this effect is given in Table II. Tachyphylaxis was not observed in the three patients studied for 25, 70, and Maternal tachycardia and increase in pulse pressure were noted in all patients but presented no problems. The most unpleasant side effect was nausea and vomiting which occurred in three patients at the effective dose after 9, 20, and 22 minutes respectively. This may well limit the period of admini… Show more

“…However, several reports have indicated that subJects with aplastic anemia associated with various agents have later developed acute leukemia (6,7,13,15,23,41,56). In some cases, the conversion from hypoplastic anemia to leukemia occurred within a r'elatively short period of time (16,23). Although the leukemia is usually ,of the myeloblastic type, acute lymphatic leukemia has also been reported in associatio,n (44).…”

“…We found evidence of this complication at autopsy in 1 patient. Apart from the re port by Delamore and G eary [8], no data suggesting a 'leukemia-induc ing activity' of androgens in classic aplastic anaemia has been described. The results of our retrospective non-randomized study do not contradict the findings of Williams et al [53], Bock and H eimpel [4], and Gordon Smith et al [13], in failing to show a significant effect on patient survival and stable haematopoietic recovery of high-dose androgen therapy.…”

“…Further studies will be necessary before a conclusion can be reached, but the difficulties inherent in finding standardized groups of patients with malignant disease for long-term study are numerous. Also, account has to be taken of the report by Delamore and Geary (1971) that 4 patients with aplastic anaemia developed acute myeloblastic leukaemia after treatment with oxymetholone.…”
