Apigenin and Exposure to Low Dose Gamma Radiation Ameliorate Acetic Acid-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Rats

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease involving chronic and recurring colon inflammation. Current management protocols are limited by adverse effects or short-term symptomatic relief. We aimed to investigate the possible therapeutic prospect of low dose gamma (γ) irradiation or apigenin treatment in acetic acid-induced UC in rats. Induction of UC was carried out by installation of acetic acid intra-rectally. One hour post-induction, rats received a sole dose of γ-radiation (0.5 Gray) or were… Show more

“…It inhibits the cell cycle, enhances the activity of hepatic detoxification enzymes, and possesses a limited antiinflammatory effect. Nevertheless, these findings agreed with other studies where the inhibitory effects of apigenin on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and monocyte adhesion to the endothelium of the umbilical vein were demonstrated through the downregulation of cellular adhesion molecules, including vascular cell adhesion protein 1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) (Toma et al, 2020;Shibrya et al, 2023).…”

“…They modulated colon weight/length (W/L) ratio, body weight (BW), and disease activity index (DAI). This study concluded that apigenin showed therapeutic benefits in ulcerative colitis management [ 159 ]. The objective of the study was to examine the intestinal anti-inflammatory effects of apigenin K, which is a soluble form of apigenin, in two rat colitis models: the trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid model and the dextran sulfate sodium model.…”

“…Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic bowel disorder resulting in disruption of the integrity of the colon as characterized by persistent colorectal inflammation and ulceration. No single collective etiology underlies the pathology of UC and instead, it has a multifactorial course involving environmental, hereditary, and immune-mediated causes ( Shibrya et al, 2023 ). The incidence of UC in different regions of the world ranges from 0.6 to 24.3 per 100,000 individuals.…”
