Apical periodontitis and the technical quality of root canal treatment in an adult sub-population in London

Abstract: There was a high prevalence of AP and poor technical quality root canal treatment; a strong association between AP and root filled teeth, and between the periapical health and the technical quality of the root canal treatment. The results are consistent with previous studies using similar methodology and re-confirmed that high technical quality root canal treatment is crucial to ensure a favourable treatment outcome.

“…This was in good agreement with previous reports [35, 38], and lower if compared to investigations using conventional radiography [39]. Regarding the categories length and homogeneity of endodontic treatment, coronal restoration, and periapical status the inter-rater reliability as assessed by Cohen’s κ was satisfying, and this was in accordance with previous studies [7, 10, 40].…”

“…However, contrary to other recent investigations [34], teeth scored as PAI 1 and 2 were not included in the present study [14], and we pooled scores 3 to 5 [35]. Therefore, we focussed on unambiguous radiographic signs, and tried to compensate for the negative predictive value (0.67) of radiographs for apical periodontitis [36].…”

“…The prevalence of chronic apical periodontitis (34.81%) agreed with studies conducted in other populations in Buenos Aires in Argentina 13 , Bucaramanga and Floridablanca in Colômbia 14 , and Barcelona in Spain 15 , where it ranged 27%to 49%. However, these results were higher than those reported in other surveys conducted in English 16 (4.1%), Scottish 17 (5.8%) and Kosovan 18 (12.3%) populations. The discrepancies observed among these studies may be justified by the different degrees of human development among these populations.…”
