Aphodiinae from Sabah (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

Abstract: Twelve species of Aphodiinae are listed from Sabah: Saprosites crockerensis sp. n. is described and illustrated, Ataenius kelatianus Balth. is synonymized with A. orbicularis A. Schm. Information is added on the distribution of each species. By the courtesy of Dr. Ivan Lobi I had the opportunity to study the Aphodiinae from Sabah (NE Borneo) collected by him and Dr. Daniel Burckhardt in 1987 and by Dr. Ales Smetana in 1988. Even though small, the material is interesting from a biogeographical point of view. Ma… Show more

“…It also supports Stebnicka's (2001a) division of New Zealand Saprosites into two groups, and suggestions that the species-group (1) inhabiting forested areas of North and South Islands represents the oldest core of the New Zealand fauna. It is most likely that continentally isolated forests retained old relicts dating back to the Gondwana period when these forests were continuous along the southern coastal margin of the megacontinent.…”

“…Nine valid species were recognised, divided a priori into two groups on the basis of their morphological similarities and differences. As Stebnicka (2001a) hypothesised, each group probably evolved in New Zealand from a different ancestral colonising species. Species-group (1) has close congeners in South America, while species-group (2) is most closely allied to Australian forms.…”
