“…According to previous studies, retinal detachment has a strong bilateral tendency, varying from 10 to 20% depending on the criteria of selecting the patients and the length of follow-up (Schepens & Marden 1961;Delaney & Oates 1978;Folk & Burton 1982;. In aphakic detachment series, the risk of bilaterality has been reported to be higher (Benson et al 1975;Folk & Burton 1983;.The interval between the detachment in the first and second eye usually covers a period of several years (Delaney & Oates 1978). Patients may, however, also present with simultaneous retinal detachment in both eyes at the initial examination.…”

“…Cases YAG capsulotomies were done in 29.5% of the 1,000 patients, with average interval from cataract procedure to the YAG treatment of 16 months. Two patients with retinal detachment had had a YAG capsulotomy.…”

“…When first reports referring to pilocarpine [Posner, 1962;Scialfa, 1964] came to knowledge in the 1960's, new speculations arose to explain the basic mechanism risk factors ofthe miot ic-induced RD as degenerative changes in the peripheral structure of the retina and pathological circumstances in the vitreoretinal stability. The risk of RD in the second eye has been reported to be grater in aphakic RD patients [Benson et al, 1975], Pape and Forbes [1978] studied a series of 14 eyes in 13 patients in whom RD occurred during miotic therapy within 2 months or less. Most detachments were rhegmatogenous and oc curred in detachment-prone eyes because of myopia (62%), aphakia (24%), ipsilateral lattice degeneration (38%), or retinal pathol ogy in the other eye (50%).…”
