APEX 3: a multi-purpose test platform for auditory psychophysical experiments

Abstract: APEX 3 is a software test platform for auditory behavioral experiments. It provides a generic means of setting up experiments without any programming. The supported output devices include sound cards and cochlear implants from Cochlear Corporation and Advanced Bionics Corporation. Many psychophysical procedures are provided and there is an interface to add custom procedures. Plug-in interfaces are provided for data filters and external controllers. APEX 3 is supported under Linux and Windows and is available f… Show more

“…The phonological awareness tasks were controlled by E-Prime (Schneider et al, 2002). The auditory and speech perception tasks were controlled by APEX software (Laneau et al, 2005;Francart et al, 2008). Stimuli were presented using an integrated audio PC-card and routed to an audiometer (Madsen OB622), in order to control the presentation level.…”

“…All auditory psychophysical thresholds were estimated using a three-interval forced-choice oddity paradigm, embedded within APEX, a software module developed for psycho-acoustical and psycho-electrical auditory testing (Laneau et al 2005;Francart et al 2008). On each trial participants were presented a sequence of three auditory stimuli: one target stimulus and two reference stimuli.…”

“…In this way, most listeners will be able to reach SNRs near their SRT within the first 6 to 7 trials. The software APEX (Francart et al, 2008) was used to play back the speech and the noise at the desired SNR and to automatically score the subjects' responses. …”
