“…The Souroukoto and Sotuba Groups, and their counterpart the Segou and Madina-Kouta Groups in the Madina-Kouta Basin (Villeneuve, 1984(Villeneuve, , 1989, are made up of an alternation of continental to shallow marine sandstones, siltstones and shales recording several transgressive-regressive events. The following age data relate the lower part of this succession to the northern Char Group: 1058 Ma Rb-Sr on clays from the Segou Group (Bassot et al, 1963), 990 Ma K-Ar on glauconite (Bozhko et al, 1971) and 1060 Ma Rb-Sr on clays (Clauer, 1976) from the Sotuba Formation in the Mandingue Plateaux. Higher up, limestone beds with oncolites and poorly developed stromatolitic structures do exist, but no comparisons have been made with those from the northern Atar Group.…”
