AOS — An anionic surfactant system: Its manufacture, composition, properties, and potential application

Abstract: Several sulfonation parameters, believed to be critical to the manufacture of good quality ct-olefin sulfonate (AOS), are related to product color and conversion. The interfacial properties for single carbon number AOS and the major components comprising AOS are investigated. Results, based on surface activity, indicate that AOS in the molecular weight range from C14 through C 18 should be of value in formulating efficient cleaning agents. The data show that AOS is more effective for lowering Crisco| interfaci… Show more

“…The CMC value is affected by various parameters including surfactant type, reservoir temperature and pressure, and salt concentrations. A number of research studies have been conducted to investigate the CMC value and surface tension for AOS at ambient conditions or using N 2 (Tuvell et al 1978;Mannhardt et al 2001;Farajzadeh et al 2008Farajzadeh et al , 2009Dong-Mei 2008;Bian 2012). However, minimal work has been performed in order to verify such characteristics at reservoir conditions.…”

“…Several works (13)(14)(15) have shown that the CAC of the surfactant decreases with increasing chain length of the alkyl sulfate. Sulfonates have received considerable attention due to their importance in tertiary oil recovery (16) and in other applications such as laundry products, dishwasher liquids, and personal care products (17)(18)(19). Examples of commonly used sulfonates are sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and α-olefin sulfonates (AOS).…”

“…The literature mostly deals with synthesis mechanisms and the usefulness of AOS in laundry products, dishwasher liquids, and personal care products (17). Commercial AOS consists of mixtures of compounds, prepared from linear α-olefins (CH 3 (CH 2 ) n CH= =CH 2 ).…”
