Aortic root dilatation in essential hypertension

Abstract: Our study demonstrated a prevalence of ARD higher than previously reported. Our data suggest, therefore, the necessity of a correct choice of the diagnostic criterion that has to be applied in the single patient for definition of ARD. In particular, using the criterion pHeight in obese patients, we may avoid underdiagnosis of this condition.

“…24,25 Hypertension has also been shown to be related to dilatation of the ascending aorta without evidence of atherosclerosis. [26][27][28] Such ascending aortic aneurysmal changes increase aortic wall stress 29 and have been reported to increase the risk of AD drastically. 30 The vulnerability of the ascending aorta to having a dissection or contracting an aneurysm by exposure to hypertension has been suggested to be driven by genetic factors.…”

“…Sex-related differences in both AoR remodeling and aortic stiffness have been well described in the literature. [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46] Thus, men have a greater prevalence of aortic dilation, 39,43,[47][48][49][50] a greater magnitude of association of pulse pressure, age, and body mass index with AoR, 13 and a less steep rise in aortic stiffness with age compared to women. 40,[42][43][44][45][46] The exact biological basis of these sex-related differences remains unclear, however.…”
