Anxiolytic-like activity of oxytocin in male mice: behavioral and autonomic evidence, therapeutic implications

Abstract: These results provide specific behavioral and autonomic evidence of anxiolytic-like effects for oxytocin in males and, together with previously reported observations in females, suggest the potential utility of OTR agonism as a therapeutically relevant mechanism of action for novel anxiolytics in both sexes.

“…Further, for three peptides that are considered to be anxiogenic, CRF, Ucn 1, and Ucn 3, each impairs aggression when injected centrally (D'Anna et al, 2005;Gammie et al, 2004). In addition, oxytocin has been found to both elevate maternal aggression (Bosch et al, 2005) and to decrease anxiety (Ring et al, 2006). Thus, for five modulators known to alter anxiety, in each case maternal aggression is inversely regulated relative to fear/anxiety.…”

“…These populations have also been implicated in autonomic outflow through the stellate ganglion (27). In addition, both intracerebral CRH and OT modify autonomic activity (28,29). In the LH, ORX and MCH cell populations project to both liver and adipose tissue.…”
