Med., 2007, 212 (2), [151][152][153][154][155][156][157] Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are environmental contaminants that have adverse effects on the endocrine and nervous systems. As they are still detected in breast milk and adipose tissue in humans, the accumulated PCBs may transfer from mothers to children and damage central nervous system. It is revealed from epidemiological studies that cognitive and motor functions were damaged in children born to mothers who ingested PCBs-contaminated foods. However, it remains unclear whether prenatal exposure to PCBs affects emotionality. In the present study, we therefore examined the effect of prenatal exposure to 3,3′,4, 4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126) on emotionality in rats by focusing on anxiogenic behavior and response of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis to stress. Pregnant rats were treated orally with PCB126 at a dose of 30 μ g/kg or corn oil, its vehicle, on gestational day 15, and their male offspring were subjected to the following experiments at 4-5 weeks old. In an open field test, rats with prenatal exposure to PCB126 showed anxiogenic behavioral responses, including decrease in time spent in the center of an open field and the number of rearings and extension of grooming duration. Interactive behavior, which is an index of anxiety level, was shortened in the social interaction test. The increase in the serum corticosterone level induced by forced swim stress was facilitated by prenatal exposure to PCB126. This evidence suggests that PCB126 may exert anxiogenicity on the offspring of exposed dams, and dysfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis may at least in part contribute to this abnormality.3,3′,4,4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126); prenatal exposure; anxiogenic; corticosterone

Calendula arvensis (CA) had been reported in traditional Moroccan medicine to exhibit its extensive use to treat pain and inlammation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-inlammatory activity of CA lowers. The methanol, aqueous, and hexane extracts (ME, AE, and HE) were investigated for inlammatory efects by using two methods, namely, carrageenan and experimental trauma-induced hind paw edema in rats and using indomethacin (20 mg/kg body weight) as a standard drug. The results demonstrated that Calendula Arvensis CA extracts had signiicant anti-inlammatory activity where the HE at the doses of 300 and 500 mg/kg p.o. (p < 0.001) had the best signiicant reduction and inhibition of edema with 51.08, 71.33 and 63.38, 67.33% induced by carrageenan and on experimental trauma induced rat paw edema at third hour, respectively, and similar as compared with standard drug indomethacin 20 mg/kg body weight p.o.(p < 0.001). These results indicate that it could be suggested as contributory efects to the use of CA lowers in the management of inlammation and pain conditions.

“…(Myristicaceae) (MF) is an evergreen aromatic tree commonly known as nutmeg or mace, and has been used traditionally as a spice and for medicinal purposes as carminative, digestive, and expectorant in the Indian system of medicine. In the recent literature, MF has been investigated for its hypolipidemic, antithrombotic, antiplatelet aggregating, antifungal, aphrodisiac, anxiogenic, anti-ulcerogenic, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory activities (Ozaki et al, 1989;Park et al, 1998;Capasso et al, 2000;Sonavane et al, 2001Sonavane et al, , 2002Morita et al, 2003;Chung et al, 2006). MF has been reported to contain 25-30% fixed oils and 5-15% volatile oils such as camphene, elemicin, eugenol, isoelemicin, isoeugenol, methoxyeugenol, pinen, sabinene, safrol, and also chemical substances such as dihydroguaiaretic acid, myristic acid, myristicin, and ligan (Forrest & Heacock, 1972;Isogai et al, 1973;Janssen et al, 1990).…”

The effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of fruits of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (Myristicaceae) was investigated on chlorpromazine-induced glucose and triglyceride elevations in male Swiss albino mice. After 7 days of oral administration, the extract, at doses of 150 and 450 mg=kg, ameliorated the metabolic abnormalities caused by chlorpromazine as evidenced by significant reduction of glucose and triglyceride (TG) levels (maximal effect of 41% and 53% reduction of glucose and TG, respectively, at 450 mg dose, p < 0.01). The standard antidiabetic rosiglitazone at 10 mg significantly (p < 0.01) reduced the TG (63%) and glucose (40%) levels in this model, while the standard antidiabetic glimepiride has exhibited 55% and 16% reduction in TG and glucose, respectively. In rats fed a high-cholesterol diet, Myristica fragrans extract significantly reduced the elevated TG (47% reduction at 450 mg, p < 0.01) and cholesterol (66.7% reduction at 450 mg, p < 0.01), and also exhibited a reduction in hepatic TG secretion after tyloxapol administration. These data suggest that Myristica fragrans extract ameliorates hyperglycemia and abnormal lipid metabolism in animal models.
