“…Numerous writers have noted the important role that anxiety has played in personality theory (Endler, 1983;Jensen, 1958;Sarason, 1960;Shedletsky and Endler, 1974;Spielberger, 1966). While theoretical interest in anxiety has a long history, systematic attempts to measure anxiety objectively did not begin until the 1950s (Sarason, 1960).…”

“…An important limitation of the STAI is that it treats both trait and state anxiety as unidimensional constructs. Although the STAI-Trait was developed to assess a predisposition to experience state anxiety in a variety of stressful situations, subsequent research suggests that the scale actually assesses a predisposition to experience state anxiety only in response to ego-threatening situations (Auerbach, 1973a,b;Endler and Shedletsky, 1973;Shedletsky and Endler, 1974). In an early factor analytic study on types of anxiety-provoking situations, Endler et al (1962) had found three general situational anxiety factors: social evaluation situations, physical danger situations, and ambiguous situations.…”

“…We felt that by accentuating the "fear (or threat) of failure," as reflected in measures of trait anxiety (Shedletsky & Endler, 1974), a more valid and focused representation of anxiety would be achieved. Spielberger (1972) similarly maintained that "personal adequacy" situations are differentially threatening to high-versus low-traitanxiety individuals.…”

“…When a facet of multidimensional A-Trait is congruent to A-State it is possible to predict A-State; when they are not congruent, A-State and A-Trait are not related (see Endler, 1975~1, 1975bShedletsky & Endler, 1974). The application of LPA showed that it was possible to identify homogeneous groups of subjects on the basis of their situational interaction pattern on GTA A-Trait data.…”
