“…There is a body of research documenting that mothers of children with learning disabilities report lower levels of general health, greater anxiety (Karande et al 2009) and lower psychological well-being (Cramm & Nieboer 2011). That is, the psychological well-being of mothers of normal children as indicated by a sense of autonomy, mastery over the environment, personal growth and selfacceptance is greater than that of mothers of children with physical or mental disorders.…”

“…However, no study had documented the anxiety levels and causes of the anxiety in parents having a child with this hidden disability. Keeping this in mind we conducted a study whose objectives were to measure the levels of anxiety in mothers of children with SpLD at the time of diagnosis and to find out the cause of their anxiety (Karande et al 2009c). In this study (done from September 2006 to May 2007), we interviewed 100 mothers (mean age 40.14 years, SD 4.94, range 25.07-54.0).…”

“…This study documented that in the city of Mumbai, most mothers (75%) have already developed mild levels of anxiety by the time SpLD is diagnosed in their child. Their common worries were related to child's poor school performance (95%); child's future prospects in life (90%); child's behavior namely, aggressive behavior, temper tantrums, stubbornness, hyperactivity, or inattentiveness (51%); and making visits to our clinic for their child's assessment (31%; Karande et al 2009c). This study highlighted the acute need to address maternal anxieties about SpLD right at the time of diagnosis of the disability in the child (Karande et al 2009c).…”
