Anxiety Disorders among Methamphetamine Dependent Adults: Association with Post‐Treatment Functioning

Abstract: Although anxiety is one of the most prominent psychiatric complaints of methamphetamine (MA) users, little is known about the association between anxiety disorders and treatment outcomes in this population. Using data from 526 adults in the largest psychosocial clinical trial of MA users conducted to date, this study examined psychiatric, substance use, and functional outcomes of MA users with concomitant anxiety disorders 3 years after treatment. Anxiety disorders were associated with poorer alcohol and drug … Show more

“…Although METH is linked to impaired decision-making, individual differences in comorbid psychopathology, particularly anxiety, adversely impact treatment outcomes in METH (Glasner-Edwards et al, 2010). Anxiety symptoms, often heightened in METH (Gonzales et al, 2010; London et al, 2004; Salo et al, 2011), are linked to greater AI activation to aversive stimuli and risky decisions (Hartley and Phelps, 2012; Paulus and Stein, 2010; Simmons et al, 2011; Stein et al, 2007).…”

“…The relationship between the symptoms of depression and methamphetamine intoxication and withdrawal complicates diagnosing major depressive disorder (MDD; Langa s, Malt, & Opjordsmoen, 2011) and measuring depression severity in methamphetamine users due to overlap in symptoms of depression and intoxicating effects of methamphetamine. Regardless, a diagnosis of depression among individuals who use methamphetamine confounds treatment outcomes (Stein et al, 2004;Glasner-Edwards, Mooney, Marinelli-Casey, Hillhouse, Ang, & Rawson, 2010).…”

“…One of the few studies of psychiatric severity among MA dependent persons receiving treatment was reported by Glasner-Edwards 14 . Using data from 526 adults in a large clinical trial of MA users they found the presence of psychiatric disorders post treatment was associated with more MA use post treatment.…”
