Anxiety, bulimia, drug and alcohol addiction, depression, and schizophrenia: what do you think about their aetiology, dangerousness, social distance, and treatment? A latent class analysis approach

Abstract: Beyond the general appraisal of mental illness an individual might have, the results generally point to the acknowledgement of the specific features of different diagnostic categories. The implications of the present results are discussed in the framework of a better understanding of mental illness stigma.

“…Similarly in this study the log-linear analysis is used to study the interactions between LTP variables categories and each family role (i.e., father, mother, and daughter), which belongs to the two groups, that is, for instance, the LTP categories are cross classified with two the groups, AN-Father vs. CTR-Father; the same for mother and daughter. The use of log-linear models for categorical data in psychological research has been consistently used in existing literature (e.g., Mannarini and Boffo, 2015; Capaldi et al, 2016; Mannarini et al, 2016b). …”

“…Students' acquisition of psychiatric skills and psychiatric rotation showed limited effects on students' prejudices about people with schizophrenia, and on their pessimism about recovery (38)(39)(40). Other studies found that psychiatric knowledge was useful to improve students attitudes towards people with mental disorders and their confidence with psychiatric drugs (38,(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)(46)(47).…”

“…In particular, while medical students who favored biogenetic explanations over psychosocial ones reported less attribution of responsibility, psychology students who favored biogenetic explanations over psychosocial ones reported more pessimism about prognosis. Another study, examining the beliefs of 360 psychology students in Italy on a range of mental disorders, found that PWS were the most likely to be considered as highly dangerous, and to be strongly rejected (39). A biogenetic etiology of schizophrenia and a medical treatment approach were largely endorsed.…”
