Anxiety and stress severity are related to greater fear of missing out on rewarding experiences: A latent profile analysis

Abstract: The fear of missing out on rewarding social experiences (FOMO) is an increasingly studied psychological construct, related to negative affectivity and increased online social engagement. Yet the heterogeneity of FOMO across individuals is not known. We conducted a latent profile analysis (LPA) of FOMO self-report ratings to determine sample heterogeneity and uncover underlying subgroups (profiles) of participants. We recruited 920 undergraduate participants through a Chinese university for an online survey, ad… Show more

“…In the present study, a significant positive relationship between need frustration, FOMO, and phubbing was hypothesized. Results supported this hypothesis, and it is also consistent with the previous literature (Chotpitayasunondh & Douglas, 2016;Elhai, Yang, & Montag, 2021;Przybylski et al, 2013;Srivastava, 2005). University students with PSU often suffer from high levels of need frustration as they are likely to suffer from loneliness, stress, relational exclusion, feelings of failure and self-doubt, and externally enforced/ internally imposed pressures (DeCharms, 1968;Deci & Ryan, 1985), which might be due to the ongoing phase of life in which approval seeking and socialization are at their peak (Strong, 2016).…”

“…Fear of missing out (FoMO) refers to the feelings of anxiety that arise from missing out on what others are doing, experiencing, or possessing (Przybylski et al, 2013). Numerous studies reported that narcissism was connected with internalizing emotional problems, such as anxiety and depressive symptoms (Brailovskaia et al, 2019), and stress (Elhai et al, 2021).…”

“…According to the literature, FoMO has shown moderate association with neuroticism (Rozgonjuk et al, 2020), small to moderate negative association with self-esteem (Buglass et al, 2017) and small to moderate association with negative affect (Wolniewicz et al, 2020). Furthermore, a recent meta-analysis revealed a moderate effect between FoMO and depression, and a large effect between FoMO and anxiety (Fioravanti et al, 2021), while a large positive correlation has been identified between FoMO and perceived stress (Elhai et al, 2021). Furthermore, it should be noted that FoMO has also been linked with poorer physical wellbeing, such as, poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, bad posture, and subsequent musculoskeletal pain via higher SNSs use (Gupta & Sharma, 2021).…”
