Purpose This study investigated mental health status and quality of life in allergic disease patients compared with non-allergic controls. Methods This study used nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018. The propensity matching score was used to balance age and sex distributions between the allergic disease groups and corresponding controls. Atopic dermatitis (n = 446) and asthma (n = 483) groups were compared with controls in a 1:10 ratio, and the allergic rhinitis (n = 2,357) group was compared with controls in a 1:2 ratio. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) for mental health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) based on the presence of allergic diseases. Results The ORs for severe psychological stress, psychological consultation and diagnosis of depression were more significantly increased in the asthma (OR, 1.41, 1.83, and 2.1, respectively) and allergic rhinitis groups (OR, 1.35, 1.48, and 1.83, respectively) compared with non-allergic controls after adjustment for confounding factors. The rate of severe problems in mobility was more significantly increased in the asthma group compared to controls. Conclusions The results show that efforts should be made to manage psychological problems and improve HRQoL in patients with atopic dermatitis, asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Introduction: Topical antihistamines are often instilled symptomatically to control patients' eye allergy symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of proactive and as-needed use of antihistamine eye drops in controlling symptoms and to examine whether proactive use may improve quality of life (QOL). Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, cohort study in Japan. We classified 418 patients who had developed certain symptoms and used antihistamine eye drops for 2 weeks into two groups: those who used the drops at the required frequency at a fixed time (proactive use) and those who used them as-needed. The Japanese Allergic and Conjunctival Diseases Quality of Life Questionnaire (JACQLQ) and Ten-Item Personality Inventory were used to evaluate QOL and personality. Participants' QOL was evaluated using JACQLQ scores after matching of baseline characteristics using propensity score analysis. Results: After propensity score matching, 115 ''proactive'' and 115 ''as-needed'' patients were analyzed. After treatment, in ''as-needed'' patients, the overall QOL scale was 1.66 (95% CI 1.55-1.78); in ''proactive'' patients, the overall QOL scale was 1.34 (95% CI 1.23-1.46) and was significantly improved compared with the ''asneeded'' patients (analysis of covariance, P = 0.002). Furthermore, proactive use significantly alleviated depression (P = 0.03). This improvement of QOL was independent of improvement of the clinical sign scores. Conclusion: Proactive use of topical antihistamine may serve as an effective means for Atsuki Fukushima and Dai Miyazaki contributed equally to this study.

BackgroundThe relationship between allergic diseases (AD) and mental disorders (MD) in women has not been fully systematically evaluated. We aimed at validating this correlation.MethodsThe relevant cohort and case-control studies from the establishment of the database to February 18, 2022 in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library were searched by computer. The researchers conducted the quality evaluation of the included articles by reviewing and discussing with reference to relevant standards, and conducted the analysis of the correlation between female patients with AD and MD by using Review Manager 5.4.ResultsSix observational studies from 2631 studies (n = 1160858 women) were assessed as medium and high-quality studies. The meta-analysis demonstrated that AD was correlated with MD in female patients (OR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.14–1.29), including asthma (OR = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.11–1.22), allergic rhinitis (OR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.06–1.63), and atopic dermatitis in women (OR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.24–1.50) were associated with MD. At the same time, subgroup analysis was performed according to region, study design, criteria of AD and MD, and the results demonstrated that both AD and MD were correlated in these different conditions.ConclusionAllergic diseases in female patients do have an association with mental disorders.Systematic review registration[https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/], identifier [CRD42022311146].
