Anxiety after Sympathectomy in patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis may prolong the duration of compensatory hyperhidrosis

Abstract: BackgroundCompensatory hyperhidrosis (CH) is a frequent side effect after sympathectomy for the treatment of primary palmar hyperhidrosis. We determined the effects of demographic and clinical factors which may increase the duration of CH (DCH).MethodsOne hundred twenty-two patients who had undergone sympathectomies from 2014 to 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Anxiety was evaluated using the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory score. Follow-up evaluations continued until CH remitted. A Cox proportional hazar… Show more

“…Some researchers report discrepancies between subjective perception and the objective measurement of hyperhidrosis and CH [57,58]. Moreover, different patients react differently to the same degree of residual or new sweating [59,60]. The oldest method to measure sweat production, the Quinizarin sweat test, is not accurate [61,62].…”

“…From March 2014 to December 2018, patients with PH who had undergone sympathicotomy and met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Inclusion criteria for the study were as follows: (I) localized PH mainly in the craniofacial region and hands; (II) no previous thoracic surgery including sympathicotomy for PH; (III) no medication intake; and (IV) no definitive psychological problems (11,15). Our new technique was initiated in January 2017.…”

“…The pathogenesis of CH is hypothesized to be caused by a dysfunctional reflex arc from the sympathetic nervous system to hypothalamus, which causes uncontrollable and excessive sweat in other parts of the body (13,14). Many studies have been performed, and some risk factors for CH and the extent of sympathicotomy have been suggested (6,7,11,(15)(16)(17)(18). However, many questions remain.…”

“…State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). State anxiety is the temporary and changeable feeling induced by the arousal of the autonomic nervous system (e.g., how a person is feeling at the time of a perceived threat) [18]; the SAI measures this feeling using 20 items rated on a 4-point scale (1, "none"; 2, "mild"; 3, "moderate"; 4, "severe") [19]. Total SAI scores can range from 20 to 80.…”

“…In December, 2019, a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak of pneumonia emerged in Wuhan, China, and has subsequently garnered attention around the world [1]. On February 11, 2020, the WHO formally named the disease triggered by 2019-nCoV as Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID- 19) [2]. Public health emergencies have an impact on public mental health [3].…”
