One of the most important questions in ecology is the relative importance of local conditions (niche processes) and dispersal ability (neutral processes) in driving metacommunity structure. Although many studies have been conducted in recent years, there is still much debate. We evaluated the processes (niche and neutral) responsible for variation in anuran composition in 28 lentic water bodies in southeastern Brazil. Because anurans depend heavily on environmental conditions, we hypothesized that environmental variables (niche processes) are the most important drivers of community composition. Additionally, as anurans have limited dispersal abilities, and the study region presents harsh conditions (high forest fragmentation, low rainfall and long dry season), we expected a lower, but significant, spatial signature in metacommunity structure, due to neutral dynamics. We used a partial redundancy analysis with variation partitioning to evaluate the relative influence of environmental and spatial variables as drivers of metacommunity structure. Additionally, we used a recently developed spatial autocorrelation analysis to test if neutral dynamics can be attributed to the pure spatial component. This analysis is based on predictions that species abundances are independent but similarly spatially structured, with correlograms similar in shape. Therefore, under neutral dynamics there is no expectation of a correlation between the pairwise distance of spatial correlograms and the pairwise correlation of species abundances predicted by the pure spatial component. We found that the environmental component explained 21.5%, the spatial component 10.2%, and the shared component 6.4% of the metacommunity structure. We found no correlation between correlograms and correlation of abundances predicted by the pure spatial component (Mantel test = −0.109, P = 0.961). In our study, niche-based processes are the dominant process that explained community composition. However, neutral processes are important because spatial variation can be attributed to pure neutral dynamics rather than to missing spatially structured environmental factors.

Although São Paulo state has one of the best known amphibian fauna in Brazil, there are still protected areas for which the species composition remains unknown. Here, we present the first species list of anuran amphibians in Vassununga State Park. This area is one of the last remnants of semideciduous Atlantic Forest and Cerrado in the northeastern region of São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. To survey species, we visited six sites (two ponds, two streams, and two transects) in December, January, and February of 2014-2015 and 2015-2016, totalizing 18 days of field samplings at each site. We recorded 24 anuran species belonging to four families: Bufonidae (2 species), Hylidae (11 species), Leptodactylidae (10 species), and Microhylidae (1 species). Anurans consist mainly of generalist and widely distributed species. Although none of the species recorded are threatened with extinction according to the International Red List of Endangered Species (IUCN), four species have declining population and another three species have unknown population trends.

Temperature is an important factor influencing the toxicity of chemicals in aquatic environments. Neotropical tadpoles experience large temperature fluctuations in their habitats and many species are distributed in areas impacted by agriculture. This study evaluated the effects caused by the exposure to clomazone (Gamit) at different temperatures (28, 32 and 36 °C) on biochemical stress responses and esterase activities in Physalaemus nattereri and Rhinella schneideri tadpoles. Results evidenced that temperature modulates the effects of clomazone on biochemical response of tadpoles. Antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase had their activities increased by clomazone in P. nattereri treated at higher temperatures. The biotransformation enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was also induced by clomazone at 32 and 36 °C. In R. schneideri, clomazone failed to alter antioxidant enzymes at 28 °C, but SOD and GST were increased by clomazone at higher temperatures after three days. All enzymes had their activities returned to the control levels after eight days in R. schneideri. Lipid peroxidation was induced in both species exposed to clomazone at 32 and 36 °C, but not at 28 °C. Acetylcholinesterase was not sensitive to clomazone and temperature, while most treatments impaired carboxylesterase activity. Integrated biomarker response (IBR) was notably induced by temperature in both species, and a synergic effect of temperature and clomazone was mostly observed after three days of exposure. These findings imply that tadpoles from tropical areas may present differential responses in their physiological mechanism linked to antioxidant defense to deal with temperature fluctuations and agrochemicals presence in their habitats.
