Antral follicle count in cattle: advantages, challenges, and controversy

Abstract: The antral follicle count (AFC) represents the number of follicles visualized by ultrasonography in the ovaries. Antral follicle count tends to be variable among cows but with high repeatability within the same individual. In the last decade, AFC has been considered a biological marker of fertility with many positive aspects of reproductive efficiency for those animals with high AFC. For instance, a larger number and better-quality embryos, better pregnancy rates, increased concentrations of circulating proges… Show more

“…Previous studies have established that the AFP of a mature animal is directly and positively correlated with the superstimulatory response in cows, meaning that animals with a greater AFP have more follicles that can respond to a hyperstimulation protocol and will therefore ovulate more follicles (Singh, Dominguez, Jaiswal, & Adams, ). Published data also indicates that the follicles from high AFP animals are more fertile (Morotti et al, ). In addition, it has been determined that the number of follicles on the ovary 3 mm or greater in diameter is maintained during both the ovulatory and non‐ovulatory follicular waves of individual animals (Burns, Jimenez‐Krassel, Ireland, Knight, & Ireland, ).…”
