Antivirals Targeting the Neuraminidase

Abstract: All four approved NA inhibitors potently reduce influenza NA activity and display low IC 50 values (subnanomolar-nanomolar range) in NA inhibition assays (Gubareva et al. 2001b;Ikematsu et al. 2015;Lackenby et al. 2018). “…Since NA is responsible for viral entry and releasing viral particles into cells, inhibition of the NA enzyme has been a primary treatment of influenza [e.g., including oseltamivir (Tamiflu)] (47,48). Antibodies that bind to NA were suggested to provide durable and broad protection against divergent influenza strains (49-52).…”

“…Due to the emergence of drug resistance, it remains an urgent need to develop anti-influenza agents. Novel antivirals such as A-192558 and A-315675 are still under development ( Gubareva and Mohan, 2020 ).…”
