Antiviral Properties of R. tanguticum Nanoparticles on Herpes Simplex Virus Type I In Vitro and In Vivo

Abstract: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), an enveloped DNA virus, plays a key role in varieties of diseases including recurrent cold sores, keratoconjunctivitis, genital herpes and encephalitis in humans. Great efforts have been made in developing more effective and less side-effects anti-herpes simplex virus agents, including traditional Chinese herbal medicines. In the present study, we evaluated the antiviral efficacy of Rheum tanguticum nanoparticles against HSV-1 in vitro and in vivo. R. tanguticum nanoparticl… Show more

“…C-glycosylflavonoid extracted from Cecropia glaziovii has been formulated into PLGA nanoparticles [ 179 ], and chloroquine diphosphate has been incorporated into poly(lactic acid) nanoparticles [ 180 ] for HSV treatment. More recently, a Chinese herbal plant, Rheum tanguticum , was collected from the high mountains, ground down, and formulated into nanoparticles with a high-pressure homogenizer to suppress HSV-1 infections [ 181 ].…”

“…Natural products and their derivatives are used for treatment of various ailments since pre-historic times. A large number of herbal products and their constituents have shown promising inhibitory activity related to viral infections in humans (Ganta et al, 2017;Panda et al, 2017;Shen et al, 2019;Bahramsoltani and Rahimi, 2020). In 2002, during SARS-CoV outbreak in China, several clinical research projects were initiated on administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in combination with Western medicine for treatment of SARS-CoV infection (WHO, 2004).…”

“…Chinese medicine has played a critical role in treating whether the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 or the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Similarly, traditional Chinese medicine and its active ingredients have been proven to have significant anti-herpes simplex virus effects ( Li et al, 2018 ; Shen et al, 2019 ; Feng et al, 2020 ). JZ-1 is an in-hospital preparation that has been used clinically for many years.…”
