Background: Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) is a serious global healthcare burden with more than 257 million people infected worldwide. Patients of CHB gradually develop derangement in their physical and mental health with the chronicity of the disease. Unani medicine provides a holistic herbal treatment worthiest in the scenario of treatment strategy for chronic viral diseases with deranged quality of life. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Unani drugs on deranged quality of life in patients of CHB. Methods: In a pilot clinical trial, 30 patients of chronic Hepatitis B were evaluated for the improvement in their Quality of Life (QoL) after subjected to treatment with decoction of Saussurea lappa and Artemisia absinthium. Enrolled study subjects received treatment for 90 days and were assessed for QoL with a booklet of the instruments [EQ5D (EuroQol 5D-3L), HQLQ™ (Hepatitis quality of life questionnaire) and physical symptoms] at baseline, 7 th , 45 th and 90 th day. Results: Significant improvement was observed on EQ5D, HQLQ TM and physical symptoms. Conclusion: Decoction of Sau-ssurea lappa and Artemisia absinthium improved quality of life in the patients of chronic Hepatitis B. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate their effectiveness in improving quality of life in Hepatitis B induced cirrhosis of liver and hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

Viral infections are spreading to a great extent worldwide and affecting many people. The existing and emerging viral infections are a threat to human beings. Combating against these viral infections is a challenge with the available few antiviral drugs. Though new Antiviral drugs are being approved by the FDA every year, controlling emerging viral infections is a global concern. The currently available drugs and vaccines for the treatment of existing viral infections have limitations. From ancient times, herbs played a significant role in treating viral disorders by developing immunity towards viral infections. Some more herbs with their antipyretic and analgesic activity helped in treating fever and body aches resulted of viral infections. Antiviral phytoconstituents like alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids, polyphenols, coumarins and saponins of plants have been isolated from plants and studied for their antiviral effects by researchers. Some of the phytochemicals are even developed as formulations and marketed to treat viral infections. Quality control of phytochemicals and herbal formulations is necessary for assuring therapeutic efficacy, quality and safety of these preparations. Hence, various standardization methods are developed for ensuring the quality of herbal products. The current review encompasses the RP-HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS and HPTLC methods available for the Single and concurrent estimation of different antiviral phytoconstituents.

: “Tiryaq Arba” is a polyherbal Unani formulation in a majoon dosage form that contains four herbal ingredients, namely habbul ghar (Laurus nobilis), juntiyana romi (Gentiana lutea), murr maki (Commiphora myrrha), and zarawand taweel (Aristolochia longa). The medicine has been used as an antidote against different poisons and as a prophylactic medicine before and/or during epidemics. The constituents have been proposed to act as anti-infective, anti-microbial, and antidote against various infectious agents during epidemics (waba). Scientific experimentation of the above-mentioned constituents has also reinforced their beneficial antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties against epidemics of acute respiratory viral infections [e.g., severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), adenovirus, influenza and influenza A virus, respiratory syncytial virus infections, parainfluenza virus, human rhinovirus B, coxsackievirus, parainfluenza virus type 3, Newcastle disease virus, influenza A virus, etc.], which are a greater cause for morbidity and mortality faced by the world, earlier and at present.
