Antiviral Activity of Metal-Containing Polymers—Organotin and Cisplatin-Like Polymers

Abstract: Polymers containing platinum and to a lesser extent tin, have repeatedly demonstrated antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo against a variety of cell and tumor types. The mechanisms responsible for the antitumor activity include inducing a delay in cell proliferation and sister chromatid exchanges blocking tumor growth. As most DNA and some RNA viruses require, and even induce, infected cells to initiate DNA replication and subsequent cell division, compounds with antitumor activity will very likely also pos… Show more

“…Sulfated lignins were reported to possess strong antiviral activity against HSV-1, HSV-2, and HIV-1 [ 14 ]. Antiviral activity was exhibited by metal-containing polymers [ 15 ] and the synthetic polymer naphthalene sulfonate [ 16 ]. Lignin-like dehydrogenated polymers (DHP) obtained by oxidative polymerization of hydroxyphenyl propionic acids are strong antiviral agents; e.g., DHP of caffeic and ferulic acid exhibited strong anti-HSV-1 activity, higher than that of synthetic sulfated lignins [ 17 ].…”

“…Our most recent purposes for their synthesis include their ability to be doped, producing near conductors [8][9][10][11], and their ability to inhibit unwanted pathogens and infectious agents, including bacteria, viruses, cancers, molds, and yeasts. Some of these efforts have been reviewed for platinum [12][13][14][15], organotin [15][16][17][18][19], Group 5 [20,21], Group 15 [22][23][24], uranium [25], ruthenium [26], and vanadocene-containing [27] polymers.…”

“…The platinum-containing drugs form the basis for many of the current drug treatments including cisplatinum II diamine, also known as cisplatin. We have synthesized a variety of platinum-containing polymers based on cisplatin that exhibit good ability to inhibit cancer cell growth [2][3][4][5]. Our polymers have lowered toxicity compared to cisplatin itself.…”

“…Much of this has been reviewed in a ten volume series [1] and various reviews for platinum [2][3][4][5], organotin [5][6][7][8][9] , Group 5 [10,11] Group 15 [12][13][14], uranium [15], ruthenium [16] and vanadocene-containing [17] polymers. This brief review concentrates on the synthesis and characterization of metal-containing polymers for cancer treatment though they also offer good antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity.…”
