Plants are a sustainable resource for valuable natural chemicals best illustrated by large-scale farming centered on specific products. Here, we review recent discoveries of plant metabolic pathways producing natural products with unconventional biomolecular structures. Prenylation of polyketides by aromatic prenyltransferases (aPTases) ties together two of the major groups of plant specialized chemicals, terpenoids and polyketides, providing a core modification leading to new bioactivities and downstream metabolic processing. Moreover, PTases that biosynthesize Z-terpenoid precursors for small molecules such as lycosantalene have recently been found in the tomato family. Gaps in our understanding of how economically important compounds such as cannabinoids are produced are being identified using next-generation ‘omics’ to rapidly advance biochemical breakthroughs at an unprecedented rate. For instance, olivetolic acid cyclase, a polyketide synthase (PKS) co-factor from Cannabis sativa, directs the proper cyclization of a polyketide intermediate. Elucidations of spatial and temporal arrangements of biosynthetic enzymes into metabolons, such as those used to control the efficient production of natural polymers such as rubber and defensive small molecules such as linamarin and lotaustralin, provide blueprints for engineering streamlined production of plant products.

The aim of this work was to give an overview of murid herpesvirus 4 (MuHV-4) (synonyms: murine gammaherpesvirus 68, mouse herpesvirus strain 68), the first model for the study of human and animal oncogenic gammaherpesviruses. Based on our results confirming similarity of murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68) to another gammaherpesvirus, human oncogenic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), we were able to interpret some processes observed in the course of MHV-68 infection in analogy to EBV infection. In particular, that were the processes occurring during MHV-68-induced persistent infection in mice accompanied by tumor formation and leukemia following immunosuppression. Since EBV is a highly species specific virus, infecting humans only, these processes cannot be experimentally examined at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels in natural host. However, they can be investigated in BALB/c mice infected with MHV-68, which is nowadays generally accepted model mainly thanks to experimental results achieved by our research team. The important mouse model MHV-68 is a prototype strain of MuHV-4 species and is classified as a member of the order Herpesvirales, family Herpesviridae, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae and genus Rhadinovirus. “…Though psoralen has been the subject of many studies due to its phototherapeutic properties, angelicin too has demonstrated multiple effects including anti-cancer, anti-viral, antiinflammatory, anti-microbial, pro-osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation, and erythroid differentiating properties (Lampronti et al, 2003;Cho et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2013;Wang et al, 2017a;Li et al, 2018). Regarding its anti-viral and erythroid differentiating properties, other studies have also compared angelicin to the common drugs on the market, such as ganciclovir (GCV) and hydroxyurea, and it had was shown that angelicin had almost equal or even better effect as compared to these drugs (Lampronti et al, 2003;Cho et al, 2013). Angelicin, a member of the furocoumarin group, is related to psoralen which is well known for its effectiveness in phototherapy. The furocoumarins as a group have been studied since the 1950s but only recently has angelicin begun to come into its own as the subject of several biological studies. Angelicin has demonstrated anti-cancer properties against multiple cell lines, exerting effects via both the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways, and also demonstrated an ability to inhibit tubulin polymerization to a higher degree than psoralen. Besides that, angelicin too demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in inflammatory-related respiratory and neurodegenerative ailments via the activation of NF-kB pathway. Angelicin also showed pro-osteogenesis and pro-chondrogenic effects on osteoblasts and pre-chondrocytes respectively. The elevated expression of proosteogenic and chondrogenic markers and activation of TGF-b/BMP, Wnt/b-catenin pathway confirms the positive effect of angelicin bone remodeling. Angelicin also increased the expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) in osteogenesis. Other bioactivities, such as anti-viral and erythroid differentiating properties of angelicin, were also reported by several researchers with the latter even displaying an even greater aptitude as compared to the commonly prescribed drug, hydroxyurea, which is currently on the market. Apart from that, recently, a new application for angelicin against periodontitis had been studied, where reduction of bone loss was indirectly caused by its anti-microbial properties.
